On September 10, Professor Tang Zhishu, President of 不良研究所 (BUCM), met with Professor Paulo Cesar Montagner, President of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and his delegation. The two sides held in-depth discussions on strengthening future cooperation.
President Tang warmly welcomed the delegation, noting the deep ties between China and Brazil in the field of traditional medicine. He highlighted that the 19th World Congress of Chinese Medicine, successfully held in S?o Paulo in November 2022, marked an important milestone as the first time the congress was held in South America since its inception two decades ago. Tang emphasized that Chinese medicine (CM) is not only a treasure of China, but also a shared health resource for humanity. Today, CM has become an integral part of China’s national healthcare system and continues to make important contributions to global health in more than 190 countries and regions.
Tang underlined BUCM’s strong commitment to high-level cooperation with Brazil and Latin America. He proposed three initiatives: first, to jointly explore and promote cooperation in teaching, research, community engagement and technological innovation; second, to facilitate exchanges and mutual visits between faculty and students to broaden academic horizons; and third, to carry out global medicinal plant research through the synergy of modern technology and international collaboration.
President Montagner affirmed the strategic significance of cooperation between the two universities and introduced UNICAMP’s strengths and vision in the medical field. He noted that UNICAMP, as one of the Brazilian universities with the closest ties to China, enjoys national and international recognition in medical sciences and boasts strong academic resources. He also shared that several departments at UNICAMP have expressed strong interest in advancing collaboration, particularly in rehabilitation, nutrition, and other health-related fields. The university is planning to establish a China Studies Center, with CM as a key component, to further strengthen relevant disciplines. The Brazilian side expressed its eagerness to sign a cooperation agreement soon, in order to deepen research collaboration and academic exchange under an established framework.
Both sides agreed that the meeting would further advance practical cooperation in talent cultivation, scientific research, and faculty and student exchanges. They emphasized that such collaboration will inject new impetus into the high-quality global development of CM and contribute wisdom and strength to building a global community of health for all.
